Earlybird of the Month

Our Earlybird Premmie of the Month for March is Lucas Wilhelm, born at 26 weeks and 3 days to parents Samantha and Matthew.

On October 16 at the John Hunter Hospital, Samantha had to give birth to baby Lucas because of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) that was caused by a restricted blood flow. He was born 12 weeks early at 490 grams.

Samantha has had an emotional rollercoaster and recalls her first memorable experience as a mum.

“His birth was an emotional experience and seeing him for the first time was overwhelming,” she says.

“My first kangaroo cuddle happened for two and a half hours and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Matthew and I consider it as Lucas’ first biggest milestone.”

Lucas is still in hospital and is scheduled to be there until after his expected due date, January 19. Both parents are taking it day by day. Lucas has had a partial collapsed lung, four blood transfusions, insulin, ventilation, CPAP and re-ventilation.

Samantha says it has been a continuous challenge, but is certain that Lucas will overcome it.

“Our journey is ongoing. Lucas still has a long way to go with a few tests still lined up, but he is strong and we know he’ll pass all of them with flying colours,” she says.

They get their strength from family and friends, and are grateful for the NICU team at John Hunter, their obstetrician and staff at Newcastle Private Maternity ward for giving their son the best chance of coming home happy and healthy.
