Breast milk or formula?

It’s one of the most controversial topics new mums are faced with, often leaving many women confused. Whether to breast feed or turn to formula, parents want the healthiest and most nutritional option possible for their child.

While this decision is personal – and often decided based on comfort level, lifestyle and medical circumstances, understanding the pros and cons for each can aid in determining what’s best for you and bub.

Most health experts believe breast milk is the best nutritional choice for infants, with nursing being a fantastic bonding experience for mother and baby. During breastfeeding, vitamins, minerals and antibodies pass from mother to baby to strengthen the immune system. This helps reduce the chance of ear and respiratory infections, and protect against allergies, asthma, diabetes, obesity and SIDS. Breastmilk can also introduce different tastes and flavours dependent on what their mother has eaten.

However, infant formulas are a nutritious and great alternative to breast milk, with most containing vitamins and nutrients breastfed babies need from additional supplements. It can also be more convenient and flexible for mums.

It's important to only use commercially prepared formula over home-made recipes. This is because legitimately manufactured formula is created with complex combinations of proteins, sugars, fats and vitamins, which are essential to bub.

While you're weighing the pros and cons, talk to your doctor or lactation consultant. These health care providers can give you more information about your options and help you make the best decision for your family.
